Font

A font is the electronic form of a typeface and is used to represent the typeface on computer screens and printers. The font information is stored in a font file. Depending on how the individual characters are presented, we distinguish between vector and raster fonts (also known as pixel fonts). Unlike raster fonts, vector fonts are independent of the resolution of the output device and can therefore be scaled to any size without losing quality. However, since the output (via printer or monitor) requires a conversion to pixels, font rendering for output devices with low resolution might impair the font quality considerably. Commonly used are vector fonts such as TrueType fonts, PostScript fonts and OpenType fonts. A special position among the vector fonts occupy the SVG fonts (Scalable Vector Graphics fonts), as they are designed exclusively for the screen display.
