Whether processes, correspondence, or contracts: With their browser and Acrobat Reader they should be able to search AFP documents in the company’s FileNet archive. New rules and standards had to be set and implemented to achieve this goal: In view of the large number of users and archive accesses as well as the need to support short user Intranet response times, the request for proposal specified a translation rate of at least 70 AFP document pages a second on a Sun Sparc-3.

debitel AG

Experts who prophesized the end of the letter in the era of the Internet and e-mail, are amazed with the increasing volume of post in the enterprise. As an example, the telecommunications provider debitel AG sends 15,000 letters a day. Moreover, staff at the company reckon they send over three million invoices a month to customers, also by post.

That this volume of post can’t be dealt within a rational way when individuals are involved in each and every step to prepare letters, from writing through to posting, seems obvious at the first glance. However, few companies have addressed this issue: debitel has taken this route, and with help from DocBridge Pilot has optimized some elements of letter production and the associated printing and posting process. By doing this the company has not just reduced the cost of this aspect of written correspondence, but has also substantially improved overall operation.

Document applications can have long lives. Some start out on a mainframe system, and then transition to midrange computing. As marketers accumulate database information and fine-tune communications strategies, they may add personalization to legacy applications. Along the way, subtle differences work their way into the different versions. The changes can be minor and deeply hidden, but they can bring production to its knees. Finding them all is immensely time consuming if possible at all.

printcom Druck + Kommunikation GmbH (no connection to Deutsche Post Printcom), Vienna, can boast a company development with a remarkable history. Founded 1910 under the name Paragon, the company started out printing Austria’s first receipt books. The name was changed to Moore GesmbH in 1978, and in 1996 a merger with companies Carl Ueberreuter and Berger created a new company with a payroll of 250 staff. This company acquired J.C. König & Ebhardt AG in 1998 and the continuous printing division of the Austrian State Printing Company (OeSD) in 1999. Today’s printcom GmbH was finally created by a merger with VSD (Versand Service Druck – previously the National Form Printing Company). printcom is now a full service provider of mailing and business communication services (invoice printing, reminders, account statements etc.), supplying “everything even remotely connected with printing”. A claim that in recent years has put heavy pressure on processing operations for print data streams.

Siemens Business Services (SBS)

The enquiry from ADOP Services of Siemens Business Services (SBS) in Fürth, concerning a converter, with which PCL documents could be transformed to AFP, is from Compart’s perspective not spectacular, nor is the resulting solution sufficiently interesting for a major case study in our magazine. However, in this case, it was just the prolog of a much more substantial project, which, given the allotted timescale, can certainly be described as being very ambitious.
